For the ultimate in fine dining, look no further than The Mulberry Restaurant at The Manor House Hotel. Located on the High Street in Moreton-in-Marsh, this 16th-century building has it all. Rich in history, the hotel is home to a 300 year-old mulberry tree, which plays a prominent role in the restaurant's kitchen; its late summer fruits are used in a variety of dishes, from cakes and jams to an interesting Mulberry Cocktail. The Mulberry Bar is the perfect place to relax with a predinner drink whilst musing over the menu. Furnished with comfy sofas and intimate lighting, the bar is luxurious and traditional, but with a contemporary twist. The wine list is vast and includes a selection of 90 varieties from around the world. Eventually we made our choices from the diverse menu and were led to the restaurant via the wine wall (which holds over 500 bottles), with a glimpse of the famed mulberry tree illuminated in the courtyard. The restaurant is modern, with large vibrant paintings on the walls, lending both an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere. It would be easy, albeit entirely time-consuming, to rave about every detail of our wonderfully prepared three-course meal, so I'll stick to just the highlights. The starter of Shellfish Cappuccino with Torbay crab, poached oyster and pan-fried scallop was simply the finest starter I've ever tasted and is an absolute must for every visitor here. Equally impressive was the fillet of Aberdeen angus: tender, juicy and perfectly cooked, and I certainly won't soon forget their panna cotta, the classic Italian pudding served here with a lovely ginger and grapefruit confit. The Mulberry Restaurant was voted Cotswold Life 'Restaurant of the Year 2004', and now that I've been there the distinction is easily understood.
