Trenhaile Terrace, Malpas, TR1 1SL

The depths of Malpas hides a welcoming, family-friendly pub with uninterrupted views of the stunning Tresillian and Truro rivers. Nick Hemming , his wife Amanda, and their charismatic and charming staff have ensured that Heron Inn is an excellent shout for foodies exploring the area.

They’ve constructed a new menu that showcases the best local produce, and highlights the bounty of the Cornish waters. That said, the menu isn’t just about seafood. There’s also a superb selection of meats, cheeses and beers sourced from just a stone’s throw away that are second to none. We started with Newlyn crab Remick and smoked mackerel pâté. Although the latter is a Cornish staple, a zesty lemon infusion made for a refreshing twist on the classic. The crab Remick – a New York-inspired way of dishing up crab – stole the spotlight. This small and intensely enjoyable gastronomic experience comprised baked to-perfection cheesy crabmeat and bread for dipping and spreading. For the main event we opted for a must-have pub favourite: hearty beefburger topped with melted cheese and crispy bacon, encased in sundried tomato and olive ciabatta. We also shared Cornish paella, which seemed to contain as much local monkish, prawns, chicken and chorizo as it did rice. The Heron Mess and deeply delicious chocolate torte made for the perfect end to a special and memorable meal. The Heron Inn is a lovely, welcoming and atmospheric pub with stunning food to match.
