Where do you go in Cheltenham for great-quality pub food? Our answer is The Railway, which is situated just a little way from the town centre. It’s a fine choice if you want to relax and enjoy good fare without breaking the bank.
The Railway built its reputation on an original sausage and mash menu, and fast became a popular destination with locals. Now, the offering has been extended, and you can pop in and have a snack, something to drink, or a three-course meal depending on the time of day and your mood.
My partner perused the range of 14 sausages, which afforded a choice of exciting flavour combinations like beef and Guinness; venison, redcurrant and sage; and wild boar, as well as two vegetarian options. He settled on the classic coiled Cumberland sausage and chose mustard mash and white wine and sautéed vegetable gravy to accompany it. I couldn’t resist a taste, and one mouthful was all it took to see why locals keep coming back for more. My dinner choice was influenced by the summer’s evening – the flavours of the chilli- and lime-marinated halloumi skewers were just right for the sunny weather we were enjoying. With this kind of food and a wide range of ale and wine on offer, what’s not to like?
