The Regency splendour of The Langton is an attractive proposition from the outset. The grand white building is elegantly lit against the Cheltenham night sky and its leafy surrounds. Internally, The Langton is as every bit as promising, with modern decor entwined with subtle lighting making it an enticing place to dine. The atmosphere is bubbling and it seems like an ideal venue for a romantic date or equally for a chance to catch up with old acquaintances. The historic building was previously home to the local convent, although the strict past has now been replaced by a very relaxed, but professional environment.

Opening with the seared pigeon with roasted beetroot and blood orange salad (£6) immediately set a very high standard for anything to follow. The pigeon was flavoursome and surprisingly tender and complemented the rest of the dish very well. My partner ventured on to the specials menu choosing pan-fried scallops (£8), which also received a big thumbs up.

The mains menu is split into categories such as fish and crustacea, or pizza and pasta; main meat dishes, and a number of vegetarian options. We selected the whole roasted sea bass with red onion and thyme (£13.50). It looked and tasted exquisite, while our other choice of spit-roast chicken with chasseur sauce (£10) left the palate craving for more. To add to regard, the choice of wines and ales to accompany is very impressive, including ten different beers on tap.

If you're feeling particularly indulgent then I recommend that you sample the desserts. I had to side with the dessert of the day, which happened to be warm ginger and walnut pudding with a rich chocolate sauce and strawberry ice cream (£5.50). If there is a heaven I'd imagine this would make it to 'dessert of the day' everyday - an absolute delight. The whole evening was very enjoyable with excellent service and wonderful attention to detail - well worth a visit.
