As any true Bristolian will tell you, Gloucester Road is a veritable hive of foodie activity, with independent grocers, butchers, shops and eateries lining the street. For nearly half a century this Italian restaurant has been part of the eating-out landscape and is once again called Amici, having reopened in December 2014 following a full refurbishment. Bursting back onto Bristol dining scene with a new look and refined, authentic new menu, Amici serves dishes inspired by everything from family-run trattorias to fine-dining-style showpieces. Amici is the perfect place to let your pasta and panna cotta passions run riot.

Modern yet understated elegance and a warm ambience create the ideal setting in which to enjoy inventive, rustic and contemporary Italian dishes. Having previously lived in Italy, I have extremely high standards when it comes to Italian restaurants in the UK - an authentic dining experience is all about great food, drink and company. Although Amici is large enough to cater for groups, the warm decor gives the space an intimate and friendly feel. The staff are informed and enthusiastic about the menu, offering excellent wine pairings to complement your choices from the extensive wine list.

Good Italian food is all about simple cooking and fresh flavours, and the all-Italian chefs at Amici get this spot-on. The majority of the produce they use is from the wealth of suppliers on Gloucester Road. The chef treated us to appetisers of goat's cheese coated in lightly spiced breadcrumbs served with salted tomatoes and a beetroot parfait. We then shared a starter of ciabatta and Mediterranean vegetables roasted with creamy goat's cheese, served in an attractive pot. For the main course, I selected rigatoni Montana, al dente rigatoni with asparagus, sunblushed tomatoes and chicken in a cream and dolcelatte sauce. My dining companion plumped for pollo Milanese, a pan-seared butterflied chicken breast in breadcrumbs with spaghetti in a fresh tomato sauce. Though we'd sampled two hearty courses, the allure of the impeccably presented desserts was all too much. I went for a slice of rich chocolate fudge cake, while my friend ordered the tiramisu, homemade in the traditional Italian way.

Amici brings the simplicity of authentic, family-orientated Italian dining to Bristol, encouraging guests to share the experience with their family to create and strengthen bonds across generations. With the tradition of Italian fare and culture as its touchstone, Amici is doing everything right
