Nestled in the beautiful Clifton Village, Nutmeg oozes flair and personality. The food is an experience in itself, and each dish will take you on a journey. Excellent food and fantastic service are the order of the day; the attentive staff strive to make each diner’s visit memorable for all the right reasons. It’s no surprise that Nutmeg won Best Indian in Bristol at Bristol Good Food Awards last year, as well as featuring in the Michelin Guide for two consecutive years. Despite this, Nutmeg offers a relaxed dining experience, from the authentic decor to the welcoming staff.

We arrived on a pleasant Wednesday evening and immediately felt at home as we were ushered to our seat. Once seated, our friendly waiter explained the concept of the impressive menu – an extensive offering which celebrates the 29 states of India. Nutmeg also presents a new tasting menu every two months which focuses on a different region of India, striking the perfect balance of traditional and modern Indian cuisine. The current tasting menu showcases dishes from the region of Andhra Pradesh, and after much deliberation, we decided to share the tasting menu, as well as a sampling a few other dishes. We started with an amuse-bouche of golgappa puri – crisp and delicate pastry shells filled with chilli, chaat masala chickpeas and tamarind water – before tucking in to sirloin steak marinated in hot dried chillies and cumin, and tandoori chicken thigh with garlic and turmeric. Both dishes were simply outstanding and left us eager for more. Next came a selection of four large dishes including a delicious Hyderabadi lamb biryani and a fresh green curry made with chicken, herbs and cashews. This came served with basmati rice and a tasty beetroot paratha. For a final flourish, my partner enjoyed a moreish chai crème brûlée, while my banana-based mauz ka meetha was a total triumph.

It’s not just the kitchen team that excels; the knowledgeable bar staff will help you find the perfect drink to suit your tastes. I enjoyed a few refreshing pints of lager, while my partner took great delight in the range of innovative cocktails. Nutmeg has clearly achieved a winning combination. Couple this with the warm ambience and cosy setting and you have the perfect destination for any occasion.
