On bustling Baldwin Street, conveniently close to Bristol’s lively harbourside, the city centre’s shops and the business quarter surrounding Temple Meads railway station, Nova offers something for everyone. Throughout the day the venue is the perfect place to enjoy a drink and Middle Eastern nibbles, and at night Nova takes centre stage as one of Bristol’s most popular live music venues, serving fantastic cocktails until the early hours.

We stopped by on a Saturday lunchtime and were charmed by the laid-back ambience and the friendly service. We decided to kick-start the weekend in style with an orange-infused Moroccan Mojito as we perused the attractively priced menu to a carefully curated soundtrack of 1970’s classics.

We started with a couple of mezze-style sharers of grilled halloumi on a bed of rocket dressed with the most flavoursome extra-virgin olive oil, and chips with Middle Eastern dips. The hummus was perfectly balanced, while the gentle spice of muhammara – Syrian red pepper and walnut dip – was offset by creamy baba ganoush. We also shared mains of spicy lamb koftas with homemade cucumber and minted yoghurt dip, and Nova’s famous falafel burger. The burger was my personal favourite and came topped with tomato, lettuce and garlic mayo and was served in a brioche bun alongside four-spice chips and celeriac slaw. The chunky, skin-on chips were beautifully seasoned with spices and plenty of rosemary.

To conclude our fantastic meal, we took a seat in the spacious outdoor seating area and sampled Nova’s take on the classic English Garden cocktail, which comprised lashings of gin, mint, elderflower cordial and fiery fresh ginger. Traditional shisha pipes are a crowd-pleasing feature of the venue’s unique Middle Eastern offering. You can choose from an extensive menu of exotic flavours such as watermelon, kiwi, mint and apple.

Open until 2am most nights during the week and 2.30am on weekends, Nova is particularly popular as a late-night bar, known for its tasty, reasonably priced drinks and fantastic live music events. Why not stop by for an open-mic night and show off your skills?
