A passion for Brazilian cuisine, an insistence that healthy food can be delicious and the challenge of coming up with a coeliac-friendly menu were the combined driving forces behind The Brazilian Lounge.

The Horfield-based business has been up and running since the beginning of 2014 and has already won plenty of fans. The first idea for the restaurant came up after a conversation on the subject of the difficulties of eating out when you have to follow a wheat-free and gluten-free diet - easily done, though, if you eat Brazilian. Going on to study food for several months on the subject, the staff took all of their experience from previous business ventures and launched The Brazilian Lounge. Inside, bossa nova jazz plays and the design is homely and comfortable. It's bijou, with only four tables and a bar, while outside the beer garden is spacious and pretty.

Keeping everything super healthy, the chefs cook with lots of vegetables, tend to boil or bake dishes and use only a little oil, creating an authentic menu that changes every three months. Ingredients come from specialist suppliers, with the chefs venturing to London once a week to source them. Brazilian rice and beans come direct from the country in question, while fresh veg is from the local market.

Expect Brazilian classics like feijoada, a stew of black beans, pork, smoked sausages, Brazilian smoked bacon and beef seasoned with garlic, onions and bay leaves, served with rice, spring greens, farofa, fresh herbs and an orange accompaniment. Light snacks like cheese bread and grilled skewers made utilising authentic Brazilian ingredients are perfect for a bite on the go. There are special menus at the weekend, with new and exciting dishes to try. The drinks selection is also worth some major exploration. You'll find many types of cachaça, Brazilian cocktails like the Caipirinha and numerous beers, spirits and soft drinks imported straight from South America. Fresh juices are made using Brazilian berries like the acerola, which is absolutely packed with Vitamin C.

If you love The Brazilian Lounge as much as I do, you'll want to recreate the experience at home, so take a look at the shelves stocked with rice, coffee, chocolate, olives, chillies and gluten-free flour, all sourced from South America and available to purchase. Alternatively, the takeaway menu is full of tasty treats, too
