Bustling Gloucester Road is the perfect spot for a lively pub that attracts a buzzy crowd of students and locals alike. The Hobgoblin achieves a laid-back vibe where folk are as happy to gather for a few drinks at the bar as they are to enjoy a sit-down meal to share.

A simple food offering of burgers and loaded fries befits the relaxed and unpretentious setting, but the breadth of options available was a delightful surprise. The star of the show at The Hobgoblin is the famous and aptly named plate of Dirty Dirty Fries, which has become quite the Bristol legend – in part due to its enormity. This messy and epically proportioned dish comprises seasoned French fries topped with deliciously sweet pulled pork, sticky barbecue sauce, secret spices, melted Cheddar, blue cheese and coriander mayo.

What we wouldn’t recommend is ordering a plate of the Dirty Dirty Fries alongside a burger. My partner and I made this mistake upon our visit and we found ourselves unwittingly taking on a food challenge, though you’ll hear no complaints from me. The list of burgers was extensive, with plenty of sides and extras to choose from. I plumped for The Buffalo Blue: a crisp buttermilk-fried chicken breast coated with Buffalo hot sauce with blue cheese mayonnaise and Cos lettuce. My partner, who is something of a burger aficionado, chose The Rodeo. The juicy beefburger from Buxton Butchers was topped with Cheddar, bacon, crispy onions, barbecue sauce and onion rings. The classic combination of flavours allowed the locally sourced meat to shine and proved satisfying. Each burger comes with a choice of fries or apple and coriander slaw – we went for the slaw and found it to be the perfect complement to the rich flavours.

Our visit to The Hobgoblin left a lasting impression. For lovers of fast food and bold American-style flavours, there’s a wealth of options to enjoy. With sunset and a flurry of chatter, a crowd started to gather by the bar for relaxed evening drinks. After a last sip of local ale, we decided to give up our table to friendly revelers and left satisfied and glowingly full.
