Bristol’s Old Town is one of the city’s most prominent foodie hotspots, and the latest restaurant on this vibrant culinary scene is Dhamaka. This fantastic eatery is reimagining Indian cuisine. Focusing on Indian street food, the talented team serves an array of small plates from all corners of India, alongside superb cocktails and unique curries. My companion and I visited on a balmy late summer’s evening and were welcomed warmly by the friendly staff, who struck the perfect balance of attentive and relaxed service throughout the evening. We started with two exceptional cocktails: a Watermelon Smash for me and a West Bengal Margarita made with mango juice for my companion. We opted to share a selection of tempting small plates, and each dish was as exceptional as the last – from the poppadoms with three delicious dips including mouth-watering pineapple chutney, to the vegetable momos with spicy sesame and tomato dip. One of the standout dishes was the pani puri chaat – a popular snack across India comprising crispy bubbles of wheat filled with potato, served with beautiful tamarind water and coriander and mint water. The sheikh kebab was tender and perfectly seasoned and the masala dosa – a South Indian pancake served with sambar and coconut chutney – was superb. To finish, we indulged in three scoops of kulfi and a traditional Indian rice pudding, delicately spiced and topped with almond nougatine – one of the best desserts I’ve had in years. A visit to this superb establishment is a must.
