Opened in October 2007 after a hefty refurbishment, The Hophouse has transformed into a stylish and contemporary bar with first floor dining room. Owners Wadworth Brewery are rightfully pleased with the result. Great use of textiles, lighting and design ensure that it retains a warm, hospitable ambience.

Manager Nicholas has spent most of his career in Manchester, operating gastropubs, and was acknowledged by The Independent on Sunday in 2006 as running the country's top food pub. With a few more awards under his belt and a diverse career you can be sure to get excellent service every time. The service is relaxed and unpretentious yet remains professional. Chef Darren Cox recently won the 'Chef v Chef' competition in Bristol, an impressive achievement for this enthusiastic and talented 23-year-old. Being a local lad, he is keen to support local producers. This is his second head chef position and one that he is hoping to make his name with.

In the bar the locally-sourced food remains traditionally British, with pub classics such as a ploughman's lunch for £7.50, and faggots with mash and mushy peas (£7.50). Upstairs you can find an uncomplicated modern British menu with such starters as wild rabbit and ham hock terrine with celeriac, apple and pickled walnuts (£6.50) and enticing main courses such as pan-fried breast and confit leg of pheasant, soft polenta and red cabbage (£14). The tempting home-baked bread board with salsa verde and taramasalata, with the delightful addition of a white onion soup and truffle oil entrée, leaves just enough room to sample the prune and Armagnac creme brûlée (£5.50).

As well as a fine selection of Wadworth's real ales there is also an impressive selection of lagers. The wine list evolves along with the food and is thoughtfully constructed by manager Nick, who also happens to be an experienced sommelier. The impressive selection holds such gems as a 2000 Beaune-Greves 1er Cru (£32.95), with most wines available by the glass.
