It's billed as 'Bristol's best backstreet boozer', but The Golden Guinea offers a whole lot more than that. Sure, the selection behind the bar is pretty superb, but since its refurbishment, the tastefully furnished Guinea has become a stylish place to eat and socialise, both day and night.

Events are held on most evenings - whether it be live music, an open mic night or even live graffiti art. Visit on Thursday for 'Hit The Deck' with the best in hip hop, reggae, funk and soul music. There's an attractive function room available to use free of charge, and the outdoor area is charming too, complete with picnic benches that are ideal for a drink and a light bite during warmer months.

You might start with a simple appetiser such as olives and hummus, or toast with paté, before trying a dish like the chickpea, sweet potato and spinach curry, or lamb casserole with bacon dumplings. The Guinea Platter is a great shout too - comprising honey-roast ham, Ardennes paté, Stilton and Cheddar cheese served with toasted bread, crispy salad and red onion chutney. Delicious. Otherwise, why not pop in of a lunch-time and treat yourself to a fresh baguette, washed down by one of the guest beers
