Koh Thai Tapas was born in Dorset in 2009. It was a restaurant to break Thai eating conventions as the first to offer authentic Thai food, cooked by native Thai chefs, yet served in the European-style of tapas dining, appealing to sociable and adventurous diners. Here was a place where the holy flavours of Thai cuisine could be shared and sampled tapas-style with fiery cocktails, far-flung beers and world-class music. Koh has quickly made a name for itself as a place for everyone to eat and enjoy; a place at once authentic, beautiful, unpretentious, relaxed and refined.

Koh Thai Tapas in Boscombe is the original flagship venue, and this intimate restaurant is special to the team and its loyal following. This is where the dream of sociable tapas-style Thai dining was first realised. The venue’s interior is the perfect blend of Thai fretwork, statues and murals with Victorian feature windows, intricate coving and exposed brickwork.

The bohemian neighbourhood of Boscombe, just minutes’ walk from Boscombe Pier and the wide golden beach of Bournemouth Bay, proved the ideal location to launch the alternative new concept. The restaurant still retains the energy of that first breakthrough, rippling between the mellow golds, lush greens and flame-hued woods with striking murals by artist Slam Daniels.

If you are popping in for a taste of Thai, the 24-hour ribs come highly recommended, as does Koh’s own chicken satay. For a main course, you can’t go wrong with the roast duck curry – tender duck served in a red curry sauce, beautifully contrasted with fresh fruity notes of pineapple, cherry tomato and grapes. For those with milder preferences, the yellow curry is a great alternative – it’s just as packed with rich flavours and comes with your choice of filling.

On the carefully crafted cocktail menu, favourites include a fruity gin-based Summer Daze with lime, passionfruit and Midori Melon liqueur or a long vodka-based drink: the Koh Samui Cooler. If none of the beautifully presented cocktails on the menu take your fancy, ask the experienced bartenders to mix up your own bespoke beverage. There’s also a selection of beer, cider and wine to complement your food.
