Named after The Beatles’ 1965 record, Norwegian Wood was proudly proclaimed Bournemouth’s very first coffee lounge when it opened in the 1960s. The attractive wood panelling used for the interior lends a Norwegian feel, and the walls are adorned with many photos and original paintings of the Liverpudlian Fab Four.
Norwegian Wood is renowned for its breakfasts, so much so that it is a finalist for Bournemouth’s Best Breakfast award 2016 and hungry early-birds will find the likes of Bumper and Gutbuster on the menu. Breakfast here is indeed spectacular, and yet there is so much more on offer. Among the favourites on a very varied menu are prawn Marie Rose omelette, gammon steak with fresh pineapple, and hot and tasty homemade chilli. On my recent visit, I tucked into a light, fluffy cheese and ham omelette that was bursting with tasty melted cheese and lovely lean ham. Served with golden chips and a crisp salad, it proved to be a truly filling feast. I enjoyed every morsel but made sure to save room for warm chocolate fudge cake, covered in rich chocolate sauce and served with luscious whipped cream.
Norwegian Wood is tucked away down a side street yet conveniently close to the centre of town and, unusually for Bournemouth, it has parking right on the doorstep. The staff are as charming as the unique venue; diners are assured of the warmest welcome and the swiftest service at Norwegian Wood.
