Koh Thai Tapas – Bournemouth
Chinese and East Asian
Occupying several locations in Dorset, Koh Thai Tapas not only offers an extensive menu of first-class cuisine, it also provides an education in Thai food. Friendly, knowledgeable staff are happy to explain every dish and assist you in putting together your own bespoke menu. You can sample any number of delectable dishes through the restaurant’s diverse tapas menu – from curries and stir-fries to pad Thai and salad. Each dish is classified as mild, medium or hot in terms of spiciness, so you can tailor your meal to suit your palate.
My dining partner and I visited the Bournemouth restaurant located in the town’s vibrant Soho quarter, and opted to try the tapas set menu for two, consisting of six delicious plates served over two courses. Our first course certainly hit the spot, with duck and cucumber spring rolls accompanied by homemade hoisin sauce; chicken satay – succulent marinated chicken strips on bamboo skewers served with peanut sauce – and pan-fried crispy squid complemented by Koh Thai’s hot and sweet sauce. Next came our favourite dish: aromatic pork panang curry with green beans and lemongrass accompanied by the perfect jasmine rice. We also delighted in beef pad Thai garnished with peanuts and spring onion, and mouth-watering duck tamarind comprising roasted duck with crispy seaweed and a flavoursome tamarind sauce. Everything we sampled was cooked to perfection, mouth-wateringly delicious and beautifully presented. The laid-back atmosphere and captivating setting enhanced the experience. Enormous murals of plodding elephants and giant Buddhas set against fiery sunsets adorned the walls, while soft music and subtle lighting created a tranquil feel, and energetic barmen shook up award-winning cocktails in the background.
As well as the food, Koh Thai’s fantastic drinks menu draws plenty of guests. There’s a dedicated lounge area in which drinkers can kick back on comfy sofas and enjoy the convivial atmosphere. It’s also a wonderful destination for a leisurely lunch, and Tapas Tuesdays provide a great excuse for a meal out.
