As soon as you step into this traditional pub, hidden away in a quiet spot in the centre of Bournemouth, it's easy to see why it has consistently received glowing reviews online. Walking up to the bar, I was greeted by the smiley landlady, and instantly felt at ease. As you might expect from a Wadworth pub, The Goat & Tricycle stocks a vast range of well-kept ales, including classics such as Bishop's Tipple, Horizon, Swordfish and Henry's IPA and 11 regularly changing guest ales. You can even, as we did, order third-pint servings of three different ales if you're finding it hard to choose.

The atmosphere is bustling yet laid-back - the ideal setting in which to socialise while enjoying some classic fare. Though the selection of dishes on the menu was ample, it didn't take me long to plump for one of my favourites: Wadworth-beer-battered fish and fluffy chips. My companion contentedly tucked into an aromatic goat curry from the specials board. Despite polishing off both dishes, we just about managed to squeeze in dessert - comforting homemade apple crumble and custard, and moreish Eton Mess, which rounded off an evening of traditional pub dining in style
