Set in the beautiful Mendip Hills, close to the impressive Cheddar Gorge, the Ring O' Bells is part of the Butcombe Beer Trail. Run by husband-andwife team Reuben and Lauren, the pub boasts three bars, each with its own individual character; there is a sociable lounge bar, a more relaxed eating area, and also an expansive beer garden complete with a children's play area and breathtaking views. At weekends during the summer months, the Ring O' Bells hosts barbecues, with plenty of seating for alfresco dining.

We started our meal with a dish of garlic mushrooms, home-cooked by Lauren and served with a hunk of freshly baked bread. I plumped for the local rib-eye steak - 10oz of succulent meat, cooked to perfection and served with plentiful portions of chips, onion rings, mushrooms and tomatoes. My partner was torn between freshly caught local trout or something from the specials board of game dishes. She decided, eventually, on the popular rich roe deer stew complemented by creamy mash and a rustic baguette. For dessert we chose from a menu featuring a dazzling selection of amazingsounding ice creams and favourites such as chocolate fudge cake.

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed not only our meal, but also the warm hospitality offered by Reuben, Lauren and their staff. If you are looking for excellent food in picturesque surroundings, served in a friendly traditional English pub, then you'll love the Ring O' Bells.
