In the heart of Bath lies an inviting restaurant with an enviable reputation, serving delicious Modern European cuisine. With wooden tables and simple adornments, Raphael exudes elegance, yet retains a relaxed atmosphere.

I began with the trio of fromage – a mature Cheddar and chive tart, Bleu d’Auvergne and delicious melted Camembert encased in crispy breadcrumbs accompanied by sweet pear chutney. My partner selected the king prawn cocktail, which was served with a classic Marie Rose sauce. For the main course, I was tempted by the fresh market fish section of the menu, but then spotted the marinated venison. This arrived with a medley of greens, spiced poached pears, and was drizzled with juniper berry and Port jus. My partner decided on the pan-roasted Gressingham duck breast, which was melt-in-the-mouth tender, and accompanied by parsnip purée, green beans, star-anise-poached pear, and a recommended side of creamy potato Dauphinoise. Throughout our meal we sipped a smooth pinot noir from Raphael’s own wine cellar, chosen from the impressively extensive wine list. Although quite full, we couldn’t resist the desserts of caramelised lemon curd tart and dark Belgian chocolate fondant.

The menu displayed the restaurant’s affinity for locally sourced and homemade fare, and each course was beautifully presented. Just around the corner from the theatre, Raphael also provides a special menu to suit those attending a show, both in the evening and for matinée performances.
