Mai Thai Restaurant - Bath
Chinese and East Asian
Behind an unassuming exterior in the centre of Bath, you'll find a restaurant serving Thailand's finest gastronomic treasures. Mai Thai's interior is a feast for the eyes, with ornate carvings everywhere you look. At lunch, between noon and 2pm, you can sample a starter and main course for £7.95, or a main course with steamed rice for just £5.95. I sampled the tom kha gai - slices of chicken in coconut milk soup with lemongrass and lime leaves, followed by the ever-popular pork pad Thai. The soup had a kick to it thanks to several sliced chillies, and the pad Thai was outstanding. The kang kieo warn, or hot green curry with chicken, proved why it is one of Mai Thai's most ordered dishes. The evening menu offers even more variety. From Thai salads and curries to prawns, squid, crab claws and duck dishes, the Mai Thai menu is satisfyingly thorough. Dinner prices range from £6.50 to a reasonable £9 per main dish, and the traditionally dressed staff are happy to guide you through the menu. Set menus and dishes from the à la carte menu are available to take away seven days a week. There is a second restaurant in Cheddar, so for a true taste of Thailand, get in on the secret that is Mai Thai.
