Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
GPT Smokehouse, owned by the Tack brothers, sits on a discreet corner of Bath. It was freezing outside, but when we headed indoors our shivering subsided and we took in the flickering candles, mismatched tables and chairs, splashes of colour and on-trend artwork.
The menu is bursting with ‘dude-food’ – think fabulous, meaty burgers and barbecued food cooked low and slow for real flavour. In fact, these guys have imported an all American smoker, where head chef Jamie prepares the meat. You can rest assured that everything is prepared from fresh, seasonal produce and prepared with meticulous care.
To start, I called dibs on the tempura vegetables with chilli jam, while my dining companion chose the soft shell crab in crisp tempura batter. As suggested by the chef, my companion chose the all-American Double Smash burger. It consisted of two beef patties, smashed thin with fried onion, American cheese, pickle, mustard and ketchup. I chose the Fun Guy flat mushroom burger which came stacked with goat’s cheese, cashew nut pesto, tempura aubergine and red onion jam, proving veggie dishes can pull their weight. Both came with skinny fries and slaw. Dessert was a tough call but I opted for the chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice cream, while my partner had sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream.
This vibrant venue clearly plays host to heaps of locals thanks to its sense of fun, reasonable prices and lip-smacking grub.
