When you picture Bath in the mind's eye, Acorn, and its off-the-beaten-track location, is exactly the kind of spot you would imagine. You'll head down lesser-known streets, through a cobbled courtyard containing a lone plane tree before carrying onwards to this vegetarian's haven. Acorn proudly serves only vegetarian cuisine - another road relatively unexplored by the masses - but many of its dishes can easily be altered to be vegan friendly and gluten-free as well. I began by sampling the carrot and cashew paté, the two main components of which, when blended together, become something quite special. I continued with a warming cauliflower bhaji, served atop garlic dhal, crispy kale, pan-fried cauliflower florets and a tamarind and raisin purée. It was the latter element that brought everything together, cooling the palate with a refreshing sweetness before the well-tuned spices in the bhaji and dhal stepped back up to bat with the next mouthful. Meanwhile, my partner enjoyed the earthy wonder that was the smoked field mushroom with a potato galette, salt-baked celeriac purée, cabbage and pan-fried button mushrooms. We finished, as any self-respecting sweet tooth would, with the salted chocolate tart alongside peanut butter ice cream coated in peanuts. Many people visit Bath to learn about its intricacies and its history. I'd say that just as many should explore the kind of creative vegetarian recipes that are being cooked up at Acorn during their stay
