In the rural Berkshire village of Crazies Hill, new managers John and Sarah Schlaefli are busy bringing 16th-Century gem The Horns back to its former glory. This public house, having been recently refurbished, is once again an inviting, family-friendly establishment where drinks and meals can be comfortably taken either indoors or outside in the secluded garden. Guests are also welcome to bring their dogs.

The Horns offers a British menu with a modern twist, and the head chef uses locally sourced produce to create beautifully presented, unpretentious dishes that are simply delicious. From the diverse menu, including the daily specials, we began by sampling garlic button mushrooms on toast flamed with brandy cream sauce, and the fun surf and turf option of scallops with chorizo. My main course was a well-cooked fillet steak, and my partner enjoyed the smoked trout salad topped with a perfectly poached egg. We had saved room for dessert having spied the puddings chalkboard before, and thoroughly enjoyed sharing the raspberry and chocolate cheesecake.

Whether you're popping in for a traditional Brakspear ale, a glass of wine, or staying for a light lunch or dinner, service here is extremely personable. The Horns also often holds events such as live music nights and barbecues, and private functions can be held in the outdoor marquee, so there are plenty of reasons to stop by
