The high standard of service and food from this Beefeater restaurant has proved a winning combination for decades - something of which the manager is justifiably proud.

The attractive bar (with smoking and non-smoking areas) and the comprehensive bar menu offer something for everyone, from sandwiches and burgers to healthy salads.

My guest and I ate in the beautifully restored 18th century restaurant, which is large but manages to feel rustic and comfortable. In summer you can dine alfresco.

Although the set menu contained many tempting dishes (and at £8.95 for two courses was very reasonable), we went à la carte. My parsnip and cheese soup (£2.75) was comforting and homemade. My guest's spicy grilled chicken skewers (£3.75) were tender and succulent.

As steak is the original Beefeater speciality, my guest chose a fillet (£12.99) for his main course. It came exactly as he had hoped. I was aiming to stick to a healthier option and the swordfish with Thai sauce (£10.50) was very enjoyable.

My healthy resolve didn't last, as the dessert menu proved irresistible. Belgian waffles with chocolate sauce (£3.99) and lemon meringue sundae (£3.65) went down very well indeed. All this was accompanied by an excellent Rioja (£12.99).

The waiting staff were both courteous and friendly. It's a marvellous place for singles, couples, friends and families to go for good food at great value. And its location - only 15 minutes from Windsor and 2 miles from the race course - make it a minor detour worth taking.
