Perfectly pitched at the entrance to Windsor Castle, The Horse and Groom provides a suitably convivial place to refuel. The handsome wood decor and old black-and-white photographs are complemented by flocked wallpaper and dim lighting, creating a rustic, chic and olde-English ambience.

The Horse and Groom has a rather potted history, which stretches as far back as the 14th Century. It even once featured a cellar that led to the castle itself. Sometime in the 16th Century a small timber-framed building was on this site - probably a shop or market stall. This historic establishment's first liquor licence was recorded back in 1719, and it has been pleasing its punters ever since. More popular than ever, the pub's tables are regularly filled by locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the fantastic food and fine ales on offer.

Tuck into the breaded Brie with warm cranberry sauce for a starter that won't disappoint, with the chicken liver and brandy paté served with toast and caramelised onions being similarly satisfying. Mains, meanwhile, include the inspired asparagus and butternut risotto, as well as old classics such as the Lancashire hotpot of slow-braised Royal Farms lamb, root vegetables and herb dumplings, topped with golden potatoes - hearty, home-cooked food at its best
