Uncle Tom's Cabin is a delightful rural hideaway in the picturesque village of Cookham Dean. The centuries-old building has a quaint porch over the entrance and an ancient tiled roof sloping low to the ground at the back. Baskets of flowers hang from the eaves and the large, leafy garden contains some magnificent trees that provide shade for the wooden tables and benches, making it an ideal spot for a summery pub lunch or Saturday barbecue. The recently redecorated interior retains the original wooden beams and low ceilings but also features stylish sage green wood panels in a harmonious blend of traditional and modern. Food is available in either the main bar or the intimate snug, both of which are kept cosy by a cheery open fire on chilly evenings. Uncle Tom's is Cask Marque accredited and the bar serves three well-kept ales - Brakspear Bitter, Courage Best Bitter and Fuller's London Pride - as well as one changing guest beer. Friendly locals tend to gather at this traditional pub, and it's a great place to strike up a conversation. The select menu is carefully put together and the food beautifully prepared. Depending on the season it may include starters ranging from crispy breaded Brie with sunblushed tomato, black olive and herb dressing and toasted pine nuts, to potted ham hock, gribiche, pickled gherkin and toast. Chef Luis does a great battered fish and chips, and the roast of beef or pork with honey-roasted carrots, parsnips and braised Savoy cabbage is also a popular choice. Make sure you save some room for afters, as the desserts are divine - particularly the artistically presented cheesecake. Both the drinks and the food are served by friendly and efficient staff for whom nothing is too much trouble, making every aspect of your visit thoroughly enjoyable. The pub's rural setting makes it a great place as a starting, mid-way or finishing point for the many country walks in the area. Dogs are welcome both in the garden and the bar and there are even treats available so your pooches can be pampered while you indulge in a pint and some of Uncle Tom's excellent food
