Offering a traditional, welcoming atmosphere as you enter the pub, The Prince Albert's more unusual features shine through as you step into the restaurant. Various pieces of artwork, many of which can be purchased, hang on the walls alongside curious bits and bobs that have no doubt been collected over the years to add character to the spacious dining room.

Lest you find yourself spending too much time admiring the decor, the extensive menu will soon demand your full attention. On offer is a blend of traditional home cooking and signature dishes, as well as some superb sharing plates for starters. We opted for the crispy duck (£6.95), served with sliced cucumber and spring onions, warm rice pancakes and a trio of sauces, as well as chicken nachos (£7.95) with melted Cheddar cheese, homemade salsa, guacamole, sour cream and a satisfyingly punchy Mexican sauce. Both are ideal to share; the portions are generous and perfect for lovers of finger food. We were delighted with the beef steak and red wine casserole topped with Stilton dumplings, served in a pickling jar - a lovely, quirky touch - and accompanied by a smooth root vegetable mash. At just £10.25 you'd be hard-pressed to find better value for such a hearty supper. The tender slow-roasted shoulder of lamb (£12.95), also served with root vegetable mash, was just as impressive. Needless to say, it didn't stay on the plate for long.

Vegetarians are well catered for with dishes like sweet potato chilli, and the children's menu offers a selection of freshly made dishes to satisfy younger foodies. On Sundays the restaurant offers two or three-course roast dinners, priced at £11.95 and £13.95 respectively. Wines start at £3.45 a glass and we highly recommend the citrusy chenin blanc (£12.95 for a bottle) - it could quite possibly be one of the best house whites you'll try this year.
