Welcomes don't come much warmer than at The Golden Lion. Cosy, relaxed and efficient, this is a pub run by hosts who know exactly how to make their guests feel at home. Brid and Derek Phelan have brought a lifetime's experience in the hospitality trade to Winchester. Since taking over The Golden Lion in 2008, they have transformed a hostelry that people once drove straight past into one actively sought out for its warm atmosphere and fine cuisine. Outside you are greeted by award-winning floral displays, plenty of parking and a landscaped garden, while soft lighting, unobtrusive music, comfy chairs and a real fire set a tone that is pleasing to families, business people, locals and tourists alike.

A gastropub this isn't, but the attention paid to presentation is worthy of more formal surroundings. A regular menu of traditional favourites, complemented by daily specials, is cooked by Brid, while Derek makes sure the beer reaches your lips in perfect condition - an attribute rewarded by Cask Marque accreditation - and keeps three real ales on draught. The wine list is well-chosen, offering something for all tastes, with a good selection available by the glass. Buy a bottle for around £12 and your choice will be served in lead crystal glasses.

We started with homemade soup of the day - well-flavoured, piping-hot tomato with a swirl of cream and crusty bread - and tempura battered chilli squid, which was crisp and delicious. Next was chicken Balti from the specials menu, bursting with fresh vegetables and served with perfectly cooked rice, and a dish that really made an impact - a beautifully cooked rib-eye steak with chips, peas and salad. Not just one salad though; an enormous plate with coleslaw, grilled tomatoes and onion rings. Desserts are traditional (apple pie and chocolate fudge cake, for example) and are all homemade and indulgent. Our sticky toffee pudding came with plenty of sauce and great vanilla ice cream. Re-launching a pub during a recession is no mean feat, but The Golden Lion team has got its priorities right. In short, a roaring success.
