The Garden Restaurant
The peaceful ambience of The Garden Restaurant is mirrored by the quiet splendour of the 16th-century Winchester Royal Hotel, in which the restaurant is situated. Taking its name from the walled garden over which it looks, guests can’t help but be enamoured by the stunning setting, the outstanding fare and the accommodating staff who oversee proceedings.
From a seasonal, modern British menu curated to please all tastes and appetites, I began with delicate wild mushrooms in garlic and parsley butter, served on lightly toasted brioche and finished with a fried quail’s egg. My wife, meanwhile, savoured deliciously herby tomato soup of the day served with a fresh crusty roll and butter. Pressing on, I opted for three-bone rack of lamb served with mint sauce-marinated turnip, potato rosti, roasted root vegetables and rosemary jus. My wife plumped for pan-fried fillet of sea bass accompanied by sweet potato Dauphinoise, buttered kale and lemon and caper beurre noisette. Concluding on a sweet note, from the selection of desserts we chose golden syrup and pecan tart with café latte ice cream and winter berry compote, and dark chocolate fondant dusted with shortbread crumbs and accompanied by cinnamon ice cream.
All of our dishes were cooked to perfection, drawing our attention to the kitchen’s skill and precision. We left vowing to return, to treat ourselves to both a night’s stay at the hotel and The Garden Restaurant’s delightful afternoon tea offering.
