The Lord Kitchener, one of the oldest pubs in Oxfordshire, is situated on the Bampton Road at Curbridge near Witney. A friendly, welcoming little watering hole, The Lord Kitchener has gained an excellent local reputation for its fabulous food and lively atmosphere.

We visited for dinner and felt at home as soon as we stepped through the door. Groups of friends were sitting at intimate tables, deep in conversation, and animated chatter filled our ears as we stood at the bar, whilst our eyes were amused by the tankards, tiffany lamps, vintage posters and flagons hanging from the open brickwork. We knew we were in for a relaxed and cosy evening.

The food only increased the sense of comfort and ease - each dish was packed with quality ingredients and evident expertise. To start, I chose whitebait, perfectly crispy and served with thick slices of wholemeal bread and a dusting of paprika. My guest's tangy Stilton and chestnut paté was delicious, served with just enough toast to scoop up every last morsel. Our spotless plates were whisked away and, before we knew it, our mains were brought to the table. I plumped for homemade steak and ale pie, filled with chunks of tasty meat and topped with a light, golden pastry - simply scrumptious. My friend's grilled chicken breast was served with a gorgeous Chasseur sauce and fluffy mashed potatoes - it looked fantastic, and I couldn't resist a forkful.

The Lord Kitchener has a heated patio area, perfect for those British summer evenings, and a children's play area to keep the little ones amused. When the weather is warm you can even try your hand at the traditional Oxfordshire pub game, Aunt Sally. What better way to while away the day.
