If you're clued-up on history, you'll recognise this as the location of the famous First Battle of Newbury. Thankfully, muskets have now been replaced with fine food and it's certainly safe to bring all the family (including dogs) to the newly renovated Gun. Here you'll find traditional wooden floors, a warm, welcoming ambience and a very attractive menu featuring both traditional and international dishes.

We pulled up a pew in the relaxing lounge area and sampled baked Brie served on toasted mushrooms with Parmesan breadcrumbs and spicy tandoori chicken with a cool mint yoghurt sauce to start. Both were superb and we eagerly awaited the main event. Soon, an aromatic homemade feta and mint burger arrived, served on a grilled bap with chips, and my companion lost no time in devouring it all. I plumped for the mixed fish grill - this beautifully presented dish, with whole crevettes, tuna steak, fillet of sea bass and fillet of salmon, was fit for a king.

There was a dreamy selection of desserts. My Baileys cheesecake with chocolate sauce was melt-in-the-mouth delicious, but I still couldn't refrain from helping myself to some of the generous scoops of homemade ice cream which my companion savoured - and immediately fell for the glorious milk chocolate and coconut flavour. As we left, we saw the lively bar boasting darts and a pool table and popped in for a cheeky pint, before declaring The Gun our new favourite hang-out.
