This thriving inn is located just over the toll bridge at Pangbourne, and is aptly named after the vessel that carried people across the Thames before the bridge was built. Set on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Whitchurch-on- Thames is the picturesque village The Ferryboat calls home.

The current owner took over The Ferryboat in 2011 and, with head chef Ramon, has since carefully created a modern restaurant with a bistro feel, while retaining the traditional attractions of a local pub. A vibrant yet comfortable bar area serves three traditional ales, while a 40-cover adjoining restaurant serves à la carte and fresh specials menus with an Italian influence. Homemade takeaway and eat-in pizzas are cooked in a traditional stone-based oven.

We chose the delicious Canadian crab claws in garlic butter with freshly baked bread, and the Loch Fyne smoked salmon with chive and lemon-dressed salad to start. For mains, I settled on the extra-matured Aberdeen Angus fillet of beef with red wine and garlic-roasted new potatoes - an exceptionally tender and full-flavoured fillet. Having admired it on many of the surrounding tables, my partner chose the venison pie served with fries and fresh vegetables. Our night at The Ferryboat was memorable for all the right reasons. A top tip - book early for Friday and Saturday evenings
