The Crown & Garter
A local landmark in Inkpen since 1640, The Crown & Garter retains its old pub charm, set in the picturesque Berkshire countryside. This family-friendly venue is the perfect stop for dog-walkers, cyclists and ramblers, as well as those just looking for a cosy spot in which to put the world to rights in an idyllic setting.
Part of the Honesty Group, the team here cares about good food, where it comes from and what’s in it. The Crown & Garter makes its own butter, ketchup, kimchi, jam and yoghurt, and all of the beef, lamb and pork is sourced from local producers. The menu is influenced by the seasons and celebrates the best of British produce, with all the fish coming from UK coastal waters and rivers, and the fruit, vegetables and dairy products sourced locally where possible. For a modern seafood spin on a classic, be sure to try the smoked haddock Scotch egg, with spinach, parsley velouté and lemon oil to start. The pan-fried loin of venison with shallot purée, girolles, cavolo nero, glazed baby beetroot and juniper jus is a stand-out main, along with the delectable homemade gnocchi with roasted butternut squash, Sheep Rustler cheese, toasted pumpkin seeds and sage butter as a vegetarian option. There is a daily changing specials board, and traditionalists will be pleased that old favourites are not forgotten, with the likes of Good Old Boy-battered fish, crushed peas and hand-cut chips featuring in the classics section of the menu. Choose from a range of creative and enticing dessert options, from the walnut tart with clotted cream ice cream to the ginger crème brûlée with lemon shortbread. All of the puddings come with a dessert wine recommendation, or you can refer to the extensive list of European wine on offer.
With the breakfast menu serving up a full English, eggs any way you like and freshly made homemade pastries, the lunch menu also offers lighter dishes during the day. For an overnight stay, the peaceful rooms are thoughtfully designed, set in a private courtyard you can wander back to – it’s the perfect way to relax after a delicious meal.
