The picturesque village of Compton lies along The Ridgeway National Trail and, like a phoenix from the flames, its favourite local pub reopened in late September 2008, completely refurbished and offering a warm, cosy and modern atmosphere. As well as establishing their reputation for being a restaurant with exquisite food and great wine, Penelope and Jean-Marc (chef profile page 61) wanted to keep the Compton Swan's 'village pub' persona, and so you'll find open fires, big family tables, York-stone flooring and, most importantly, a warm welcome.

The Compton Swan offers a wide range of services, with businesses very much in mind. You'll find free internet access, a spacious function room and a lunch menu designed as perfectly for snappy business lunches as for lazy afternoons out, using all fresh and many locally sourced products, plus heavenly freshly baked breads. The friendly staff are knowledgeable and passionate about the food and drinks on offer, and will happily guide you through your options.

We visited for Sunday lunch and decided to indulge in a cocktail while we perused the menu. Both a classic Mojito and a more exotic Peach Bellini were executed with style. It was a nice surprise to see that, unlike many places, the full menu was available as well as a Sunday roast with all the trimmings. My companion, Sue, was sold on the fresh water prawns with rocket, wild garlic leaves and apple salad; and I decided on the foie gras mousse with onion and plum jam. Both dishes provided a refreshing start to our meal and, warmed by the cocktails, we decided to accompany our starters with a refreshing glass of Babich sauvignon blanc (the staff recommended it wholeheartedly, and I have to say we loved it too). About 75 per cent of the Compton Swan's wine list is available by the glass, which is fantastic news for those wanting to complement each course with the perfect drink. Difficult decisions followed as I chose between the rack of venison with apple and bacon red cabbage, parsnip purée and a rich port jus, or cannon of lamb with sautéed potatoes, red onion, olives and salsa verde. I went for the latter and was not disappointed - the meat was succulent and tender. Sue opted for the wild sea bass fillets with ginger-braised bok choy and a pomegranate jus; the presentation was stunning and the taste exquisite. A family of eight next to us were delivered a wooden board piled high with roast chicken and roast lamb, roasted parsnips and a variety of different vegetables - we enquired and were told that you can book in advance to have your roast served family style. It looked utterly impressive and seemed the ideal family treat without the hassle of cooking or washing up. We promised ourselves that we would come back soon and bring the family.

Offering a fantastic, real country eating experience and friendly atmosphere, the Compton Swan is the perfect setting for lunch or dinner with friends or business colleagues, and with its prime location just 15 minutes from Newbury, Reading and Oxford, we strongly recommend it. Booking is always advised.
