Main Road, Itchen Abbas, Winchester, SO21 1BQ
The smoked trout and asparagus terrine with pickled cucumber seemed like an apt way to begin, and with food that tastes as good as this, The Trout Inn cuts the mustard with the very best restaurants in the county and also boasts individual charm of its own.

Once known as The Plough, this former coaching inn and brewery is said to be the inspiration for Charles Kingsley's novel The Water Babies, set as it is alongside the River Itchen and lush rugged countryside. Fishing memorabilia adorns the walls of the bar and an overall atmosphere of relaxation and cosy comfort prevails throughout.

Inspirational too is the menu on offer here. The restaurant's à la carte menu is full to bursting with dishes to make the mouth water. My confit duck leg with pink grapefruit and bitter leaf salad was as pleasing to the eye as it was to the palate. Traditional dishes done well, such as beer battered cod, complement the more contemporary offerings, resulting in a balance that should satisfy everybody.

This family friendly establishment boasts its own loyalty card scheme entitling members to discounts on food and drink. An over 60s two-course lunch for £7.50 is available Monday to Thursdays. An inn in every sense of the word, The Trout can accommodate guests overnight in their five ensuite bedrooms with views (prices from a reasonable £45)
