The Old Polegate Station was, as its name suggests, the town's railway station from 1881 until 1986. Tony Wyman and Karen Englund took over in 2007, and have since transformed it into a welcoming family restaurant and bar. Together they make a perfect team - Karen skilfully runs the front of house, while Tony works his magic in the kitchen. We started with breaded king prawns with a tangy chilli dip and melt-in-the-mouth battered mushrooms stuffed with Stilton - both certainly hit the spot. To follow, I chose the tender lamb shank, which was served in a flavoursome red wine and rosemary sauce, while my companion sampled the delicately cooked pan-fried sea bass fillet with an abundance of potatoes and vegetables. The desserts sounded so delicious that we wanted to try them all. In the end, we shared a slice of the lovely lemon and ginger cheesecake, but we'll definitely be returning to try the indulgent chocolate 'sin-sation'.
