The Griffin Inn
If you’re looking for fuss, frills and pretentious food, The Griffin Inn is most definitely not the restaurant for you. Filling an opening for quality yet reasonably priced cuisine within a traditional setting, The Griffin Inn takes inspiration from the European sentiment of receiving everyone and anyone with open arms, and providing a very family-centred atmosphere where children are warmly welcomed. An award-winning hotel complete with luxurious rooms and an excellent eatery, this 400-year-old former coaching inn in the peaceful village of Fletching has preserved its historic ambience as well as its original features.
As for the food, the menu is designed according to what is currently in season, with vegetables hailing from the Setfords’ Fletching market garden, fish brought in daily straight from Rye, and a selection of the choicest venison, game and beef from local farmers and friends of the inn. The homemade focaccia bread, served warm with Italian extra-virgin olive oil for dipping, is on its own rather wonderful; a simple but delicious way to begin your meal. But with a bistro-esque bar menu as well as an inspired à la carte selection, there is a host of starters and decadent desserts, as well as a wealth of meat, fish and vegetarian main-course options to tempt you. In the summer, enjoy succulent roasted lamb and steak cooked in the wood-burning oven on the terrace, or one of the inn’s renowned Sunday barbecues, complete with homemade burgers and locally caught fish grilled to melt-in-the-mouth perfection.
Of course, a high-quality dish requires a high-quality wine, so ensure you choose one of the carefully selected exclusive wines from some of France and Italy’s finest vineyards, or perhaps one from a less well-known wine region.
It’s little wonder The Griffin Inn has obtained plenty of recognition from the national press since it opened. A classic country restaurant that offers something more special than typically traditional fare, The Griffin Inn ensures superb local British ingredients are always at the forefront of its superb cuisine.
