If you're after a spot of fine dining in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, look no further than Tudor House Restaurant in the beautiful, historic South Downs village of Alfriston.

Claridges-trained chef Roger Wallwork and his wife Louise offer their diners something really special. The building may date back to the 14th Century but the food is a fusion of modern and classic flavours, concocted from quality local ingredients. I began the evening with salmon, spinach and beetroot ravioli with a creme fraiche dressing, while my friend decided on crispy bacon and blue cheese salad served in a beautiful filo basket with a garlic dressing. Tastebuds suitably tempted, we awaited our mains with anticipation - for me, a succulent local sirloin steak with crushed potatoes, spinach purée and peppercorn sauce; for my companion, Sussex lamb with Irish cabbage, creamed potatoes and a warm mint dressing.

There was no chance of us passing on dessert after sampling Roger's starters and mains. After much deliberation I ordered lemon pannacotta with a raspberry coulis and shortbread biscuit. My friend's pecan meringue with banana and praline cream and caramel sauce was devoured with such relish that there was no chance of me getting a bite. As we practically rolled out of the restaurant, replete and happy, my companion said it was the best meal she'd had in over ten years - we urge you to book a table.
