Witley first appeared in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and lies just south of Milford on the A283. This historic village is home to The Star - a wonderful traditional pub that has found its way to the top of my list of favourite watering holes. Karen and John took over as landlords in June 2010 and have successfully re-launched The Star - it now boasts everything you would expect from a local village pub. The low-beamed ceilings and rustic wooden furnishings give a pleasing olde-worlde feel, while the relaxed and inviting atmosphere draws customers from near and far. The decor is contemporary while still retaining a sense of character, and the pub boasts a wonderful private garden with a large adventure climbing area for children. The menu offers a selection of traditional favourites at prices that are more than affordable. For starters, why not try the breaded Brie wedges on a bed of salad with cranberry sauce. For the main course choose from the steak and onion pie, tuna and tomato tagliatelle or Cumberland sausages with creamy mash. Follow this with one of the toothsome desserts - the sticky toffee pudding is particularly good, and the coffee and amaretto brulée is a little pot of indulgence. The menu will ensure that there is something for everyone, and you're sure to find something on the reasonably priced wine list to suit you. The Star is a warm, friendly inn for all seasons - the perfect setting for a drink with friends, a light lunch or a quiet meal with someone special.
