The Devil's Punch Bowl itself is a large natural amphitheatre and beauty spot near Hindhead. In the 1800s, leading physicist of the day, professor John Tyndal, claimed this area was 'as healthy as the mountain air of Switzerland', instantly transforming it into a popular health resort for the rich and famous. Now, thanks to The Devil's Punchbowl Hotel, you don't have to be one of the elite to enjoy the benefits of Hindhead - but you certainly still get the star treatment.

The hotel is sited adjacent to the Punch Bowl, right on the A3, and there are plenty of footpaths to explore before enjoying a bar snack and a well-earned drink. You'll find a traditional bar offering draught ales and many wines to choose from. There are two restaurant areas, one by the bar and one offering a carvery and plenty of places to sit. You can either order at the bar or be looked after at your table by the friendly staff.

The menu provides an extensive range of food, from breakfasts, bar snacks and light meals at lunchtime right through to a three-course meal with wine in the evening. Why not try traditional handmade steak and ale pie, with a choice of either hand-cut chips or new potatoes, or pan-fried chicken breast stuffed with Brie, wrapped in bacon and smothered in a creamy mushroom sauce, then, if you have room, follow with sinful Belgian waffles with maple syrup and vanilla ice cream. If looking for a light lunch before your walk, how about an Oriental duck wrap? Or choose from a selection of sandwiches and baguettes.

On Sundays, relax over the abundant carvery, which has a selection of five meats, a variety of seasonal vegetables, homemade Yorkshire puddings and gravy, all for £8.95. The menu changes with the seasons, so there are always tasty dishes to suit the weather, whether you're looking for a crisp salad on a summer's day, or need something warm and filling after a blustery hike through the stunning local countryside
