The impressive Inn on the Lake can be found in the picturesque village of Godalming and its white 1930s-style exterior belies the fashionable interior that awaits. We were warmly greeted upon arrival by the friendly staff and the manager, Ty Simons, who instantly furnished us with drinks and a delightfully jovial manner for a cold, wet Monday.

Once in the restaurant, we were struck by the sumptuous decor; velvety chocolates, mochas, copper, deep rose and earthy oak. The modern chrome lighting served to intensify the ambient and intimate nature of the restaurant.

A lovely touch was the complimentary rustic bread served with balsamic vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil for us to tuck in to while we perused the extensive menus. Both the wine list and menu are varied and there's also a daily specials menu, all of which utilise British, seasonal and locally grown ingredients.

For our starters we chose devilled chicken livers with pancetta and onion toast (£5.50) and crab cakes with mango, chilli and coriander salsa (£7). The tangy spicy salsa complemented the warm crab cakes perfectly, and the chicken livers were rich and spiced to perfection. We followed this with fettuccine with salmon, prawns, coconut and chilli (£7.50 or £9.50), and pan-fried duck breast with sweet potato mash, asparagus and grape jus (£13.50). Dessert was a sublime, light-textured sticky ginger and toffee pudding with clotted cream.

I highly recommend this restaurant if you want food that seduces the senses and staff that provide impeccable service. One visit to The Inn on the Lake and you'll want to visit again and again.
