The recently refurbished Six Bells offers an attractive, vibrant dining area – think smart wooden floors, dark wood tables, cushioned bentwood chairs and cosy booths. Wander outside and there’s also a large attractive flower-filled terrace with plenty of seating for sunny days. For those wishing to refresh themselves there’s a comprehensive wine list, eight beers on draught and an extensive gin list with 45 gin varieties.

When we visited, fresh flowers adorned the tables and pretty cathedral candles lent extra warmth to the inviting dining space. I began the meal with a delicate platter of giant olives. My partner opted for sautéed mushrooms and Brighton Blue cheese on sourdough – the delicate flavour of the sauce perfectly complemented the mushrooms and allowed the robust flavour of truffle oil to shine through. For my main course I enjoyed a delectable toasted brioche burger filled with rich breaded halloumi. My companion chose a generous portion of panko-breaded scampi – deliciously juicy inside with a perfectly crispy exterior – paired with lemon and skinny fries. I’d left room for dessert and opted for beautifully sweet and moreish sticky toffee pudding. My partner selected two varieties of ice cream – perfect for a hot summer evening. With a cappuccino and black coffee to finish, I couldn’t imagine a more pleasant end to an enjoyable evening.
