Birthplace of King Alfred the Great, the bustling market town of Wantage is these days home to another great - the delightful Bistro 14.

Charming, modern and thoroughly relaxed, the welcoming interior is enhanced by the friendly staff. Chef and owner Ivor Leon serves freshly cooked dishes of the highest standard, created using the finest ingredients and mostly gluten free. Adding to the indecision created by his enticing menu, our charming waitress informed us of the fresh catch of the day - a seafood-lovers' dream, the selection included scallops, bream, sea bass, swordfish and halibut.

My choice of starter, a tartlet of leek, wild mushroom and Stilton served with a mixed leaf salad was delicious and light, while my husband's rich and tender aromatic duck leg confit with a hoisin dressing was also a winner, demonstrating sensitive use of quality produce. Swayed by its earlier appearance, my partner ordered the swordfish accompanied by a fresh sauce of mango and chilli, fries and a dressed salad. Presentation was beautiful, the fish fresh, the sauce cleverly conceived, the fries crisp with fluffy centres and the salad fresh with plenty of bite. Equally accomplished, my slow-roast belly of pork with thyme jus, Dauphinoise potatoes and braised red cabbage was a show-stopper. Choosing desserts was difficult but my creme brulée, accompanied by a homemade biscuit, tasted as good as it looked, and the chocolate torte served with tipsy cream (the 'tipsy' element was provided by a generous splash of Grand Marnier) was declared a new favourite. A truly delightful meal - we'll certainly be returning
