Having undergone an extensive refurbishment, The Fl owing Well at Sunningwell has started a new chapter - and serving superb food is an important part of that. With new terrace seating to the front, diners can make the most of the Oxfordshire views, while the rustic yet modern open-plan interior welcomes those who prefer to dine undercover. The main dining area incorporates a good view of the open kitchen, and the small side bar offers a great setting in which to enjoy a few drinks or lunchtime specials. The main menu sports meat, fish and vegetarian options, as well as an extensive wine list featuring carefully selected varieties. On our visit we noticed how friendly and knowledgeable the staff were; always ready to offer advice in all areas. Their passion for fine cuisine and service was second to none. We started with one of four appetising sharing options: ours included duck rillettes, Welsh rarebit, a homemade pork pie, onion confit and toasted sourdough. The duck was aromatic, the rarebit tangy, and the pie and confit were perfectly matched. I was tempted by the delicious-looking stone-baked pizza, but instead I opted for barbecue baby-back ribs from the grill, served with house-slaw and fries. 'Generous' would be an understatement; the smoky, succulent and tender rack was made all the better by the fresh house-slaw - creamy and fl avourful. My partner went for the crispy duck salad and bean sprouts with crunchy spring onions and a raspberry and juniper dressing. The dressing cut through the rich meat with its perfectly tart edge, and provided a vibrant dash of colour on the plate. We finished with a show-stopper of a pudding that is gathering fans in droves. Since being introduced as a Wimbledon special, the irresistible fresh strawberry sundae with ice cream, toffee sauce and honeycomb has stayed firmly on the menu due to popular demand. In keeping with the summery theme, our second sweet serving of strawberry and basil pannacotta was creamy and well complemented by a smooth, rich mocha coffee. The Flowing Well is a beautiful setting offering modern brightness with classic style, and its seasonally fresh menu ensures it will be the setting for many more enjoyable times to come.
