The Lamb at Buckland
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
We arrived for Sunday lunch and were greeted by a smiling Peta, who made us feel immediately at home. The Lamb is cosy inside, with gentle reminders of the pub's namesake dotted around - lambs on the carpet, blackboards and even on bookends. The restaurant is equally inviting, but we chose to eat in the bar and made our selections from the set menu on the board above the fireplace. A smooth, velvety mushroom soup and potted shrimps with smoked salmon awakened our tastebuds. For mains I opted for the warm spiced chicken, bacon and avocado salad, while my partner tucked into English lamb, roasted with garlic and rosemary, which he declared 'outstanding' - beautifully cooked fresh vegetables of the day accompanied our meals. We could have chosen Dover sole or Gressingham duck, amongst other delicious-sounding dishes, and made vows to return. The memory of dessert will linger a long time - mine was a perfect chocolate and orange mousse, and even just a taste of my companion's steamed syrup sponge pudding with custard was heavenly.
The Lamb's wine list is extensive, with prices to suit all budgets, and a 'family hour' is offered on Fridays and Saturdays, between 6pm and 7pm. Parents can enjoy a ten per cent discount off the normal menu, plus a glass of house wine, and the kids can choose from the excellent children's menu. To top everything off, Paul also makes a tempting variety of jams and chutneys - you can purchase these at the bar and take a little piece of this charming pub home.
