Steeped in history and once the dwelling of the famed author of Vanity Fair, Thackeray's is one of Britain's most charming restaurants. This modern French restaurant, that achieved a Michelin star in its first year of business, occupies a grade-II-listed building of unique character and understated elegance. In 2001 it was subject to a glorious conversion, which has created two main dining rooms that are cool and modern whilst preserving much of its architectural character. Celebrity executive chef-patron, Richard Phillips, has crafted a menu that offers the finest produce prepared with the utmost attention to detail, leading to the recent accolade of 'Best Gourmet Restaurant' at the 2010 Kent Restaurant Awards. Three-course set menus at Thackeray's start at £17.50 and its sommelier offers expertly selected wines to match each dish. For a real treat, try the finest roast sirloin of Sussex Breed beef served 'Yorkshire style' or perhaps Thackeray's signature dish, a spectacular roast sloe-crusted saddle of Chart Farm venison with spiced red cabbage, Portbraised salsify, crushed violet potatoes and pear and juniper jus. However, you might prefer the tasting menu which offers smaller portions of all of Thackeray's finest dishes, once again complete with matching wines for each course. The meticulous preparation and presentation of a menu that sparkles with flavour reflects the restaurant's elegant atmosphere and surroundings to provide the ultimate in special-occasion dining.
Open: Tues-Sat noon-2.30pm, 6.30pm-10.30pm; Sun noon-2.30pm
