What do you get when you combine a historical English inn with enthusiastic new Italian owners and fine imported produce? You get The Chequers; a slice of Italy in the small town of Lamberhurst, very highly regarded in the area for its authentic, indulgent food and welcoming service.
The bright, spacious interior features fairy lights intertwined with twigs alongside large oak beams, making for a perfect balance between romantic Italian decor and an English country-pub ambience. Under new ownership, The Chequers has already made a name for itself, gaining glowing reviews from delighted visitors.
The in-house deli presents the perfect opportunity to try your hand at Italian cooking at home after being inspired by a delicious meal. All produce is imported directly from top-quality suppliers in Italy and serves as the basis for much of the menu. To start, a favourite is the gran tagliere – a sharing platter of fine Italian meats, cheeses, olives and more. Follow this with an authentic pasta dish such as spaghetti alla carbonara or lasagne. A range of meat, fish and salad dishes are also available from the secondi menu, including the tempting filetto lardellato di maiale: pork tenderloin rolled in pancetta, doused in Gorgonzola sauce and served with spinach. To finish, the selection of desserts is short and sweet. For a classic end to your Italian feast try the tiramisu and enjoy the rich flavours of the authentic recipe. The long wine list boasts a wide selection of options to accompany your meal, each imported from Italy – a delicious red wine is the perfect accompaniment to the hearty carbonara. Bottled beers and ales are also available alongside a range of cocktails, which are best enjoyed during happy hour on Fridays from 6pm until 8pm.
Together with the deli, large outdoor space and delicious, authentic food, The Chequers is a thriving new hub for the community. Four en-suite rooms provide the perfect base from which to explore the surrounding High Waild Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hikers and their dogs are made welcome with two large open fires, and the two-course lunchtime set menu, which ranges from £12.90 to £14.90, is the perfect remedy for tired walkers.
Keep your eyes peeled for The Chequers’ themed nights – among the varied line-up of events, every other Wednesday celebrates a different region of Italy with food and music.
