This rustic Tudor hotel has accommodated many famous figures since first opening in the 1300s, including Elizabeth I, who paid a visit in 1573, and General Montgomery, who stopped for the night en route to the D-Day landings. We were very pleased to be seated at a table overlooking the beautiful terrace garden, where we shared a dish of green and black olives before our starters arrived at the table. The seared scallops were perfectly cooked and served atop a smooth and creamy cauliflower purée with wafer thin slices of Parma ham. The celeriac, fennel and thyme soup was light and earthy, and I enjoyed it with a portion of locally baked bread. For my main course I opted for a juicy rack of lamb, which was served with delicious mashed potato, crispy pancetta and buttered kale. My companion plumped for the platter of king prawns, cooked in a light and crispy tempura batter, and presented on a bed of peppery rocket with a spicy chilli and sweetcorn salsa. We then elected to share a selection of cheeses, despite the range of enticing desserts.

Offering great food and drink, as well as luxury accommodation, a monthly quiz night and the occasional spot of live music on Sundays, The George Hotel is recommended for all occasions
