'Mighty oaks from little acorns grow' is an idiom that seems appropriate when writing about Basil. Transforming a small café into a swish and classy eatery over the course of eight years, sibling partnership, Matthew and Julia have hit upon a winning formula. Located close to the Royal Victoria shopping mall, with plenty of parking, the second Basil can boast an extremely loyal following of ladies who lunch, business folk, shoppers and passersby, who all know a good thing when they see it. From breakfast and lunch, to afternoon tea and cake, your tastebuds are in for a treat at Basil.

From their production kitchen, elsewhere in Tunbridge Wells, all the dishes are made up fresh every morning, cooked and then distributed to their venues, which will soon include a new café in Tonbridge (open April 2015). The ingredients couldn't be fresher or better, owing to fruit and vegetables sourced daily from the market by their Rusthall greengrocer, the local butcher, who contributes mostly free-range produce, and the fantastic Southborough bakery, which delivers freshly baked bread.

Both my dining companion and I started with the freshly made tomato and basil soup of the day, with crunchy bread - packed with flavour and satisfyingly robust. For my main course the mushroom and fig tart from the chalkboard specials selection was outstanding, particularly when partnered by the huge plate of mixed salad, featuring butternut squash and figs, which we shared. The selection of homemade quiches on display caught my partner's eye - from the crusty pastry and firm base to the goat's cheese and caramelised onion filling, all was mouth-watering and delicious. For dessert, from the glorious homemade selection on display, we opted for a moist lemon and raspberry layer cake and a plum and almond slice, which we shared to avoid plate envy. A small selection of wine and bottled beer complements an array of healthy juices, shakes, teas, hot chocolate, smoothies and speciality coffees. I can only see Basil going from strength to strength, and deservedly so - well done Matthew and Julia
