The View is unlike any other restaurant in Tonbridge. A bold claim, perhaps, but this hidden gem, tucked away on the third floor of West Kent College, is staffed by catering and hospitality students mastering the art of contemporary fine dining.

At a Thursday lunchtime sitting, the restaurant bustles with diners enjoying the fine panoramic vista over The Weald. Menus display mouth-watering, classic flavour combinations such as duck leg confit in rich Marsala sauce, and roast John Dory in mussel, celeriac and apple broth. A starter of leek soup is flavourful and a main course of traditional fisherman’s pie delivers the perfect balance of smokiness and saltiness, accompanied by buttery, rosemary-enriched sweet carrots and French beans. The citrus cheesecake with Chantilly cream is light and zesty, crowned with a white chocolate lattice.

Head chef Darren Fry boasts a diverse CV, including stints cooking on the HMS Invincible and at BBC White City. All meat is sourced locally from Haywards Butchers, and the wine list features many from Chapel Down’s range.

Prices at The View are jaw-dropping for all the right reasons. A two-course lunch will set you back £5, while a five-course (yes, five) evening meal comes in at a wallet-friendly £18 – a small price to pay for exceptional dishes from future gastronomic stars.
