Located in the grounds of Hadlow College – Kent’s outstanding rural college – Broadview is an enticing prospect. The interior is bright and modern with quirky touches such as the human-shaped articulated floor lamps and a gallery of renowned local artist Graham Clarke’s etchings. The charming tearoom is found towards the back of lovely Broadview Gardens, which is free to enter and maintained by the students. It’s the perfect place to walk off your scones and clotted cream and admire the National Collection of hellebores.

The friendly, attentive staff might recommend the Kentish rarebit; a signature dish consisting of a thick slice of bloomer loaf layered with fig and ale chutney, an egg yolk and a dollop of mustard, topped with grilled Kentish Cheddar. My companion enjoyed an excellent omelette generously filled with chorizo and local cheese.

It seemed criminal not to sample something from the huge array of tantalising cakes and pastries, all beautifully presented under glass cloches. We opted for sizeable slabs of homemade raspberry Eton Mess cake and white chocolate and passion fruit cake accompanied by cockle-warming gingerbread hot chocolate.

With a family room and outdoor play area, Broadview is child-friendly and has patio seating to be enjoyed in the warmer months. Broadview Tea Room offers an extensive breakfast menu, gluten-free options, a good range of wine, beer and cider, and above all, is a cosy haven to while away the hours.
